Seize the day because life is what you make it...

2012 - New Years Eve..

This is my last post in 2012 and what I can I say?!? It's been a great one! I finally turned myself around and I can say that I found me again and I'm happy! I know that 2013 will be epic for so many reasons, it will be the year in which my racing journey officially begins and now that I'm me again I can reach other personal goals. It will be the adventure of a lifetime and I'm looking forward to all the new possibilities that will present themselves and all the dreams that I will make come true. I am also very grateful for all of you! I count my blessings with so many of you who've become my closest friends. I give you thanks for all the rooting throughout the year and for your loving comments. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for making 2012 an unforgettable one. Love you all!!

I wish you all a Happy New Year! May it be a blessed one full of love, happiness and lots of health.
May you all continue to bring it!
From my family to yours we wish you all and your loved ones a Feliz Ano Nuevo!

Now to get my running clothes ready for my 1st race in just a few hours :)
I feel like I'm going to throw up, but I know all my training will pay off, when I cross that finish line.
She Believed She Could So She Did

See you all in 2013!!

My 1st Two Official race bibs! #getafterit

My cheesy smile with my 1st official running bib :)
Munchkin with his race bib number for The Commitment Day race :) He's ready to #getafterit
My 1st two official race bibs! Eeeeeee....
Today was the day I got to pick up my 1st two official race bibs! Can I just say that my knees were shaking as I said my name at the NYYRC to pick up my race bib. I'm so used to saying my husbands name, munchkins, or my dads. But not this time around, this time it was my name that I was saying and it felt so surreal that I thought I would cry right there on the spot. I am so emotional and excited!
We than took the bus all the way downtown to pick up munchkins, my mom's, husbands, and mines race bib number for the Commitment Day race.
January 1st is going to be amazing, two races hours after each other and it's the beginning of my official racing journey.
This girl plans to make 2013 epic!

This girl is ready to crush it and kick some serious ass in 2013!!
Woot!!

Love,
Kary xoxo

Only 4 days left, until I #getafterit

Only 4 days left till we ring in 2013, which means that my big race is almost here!
Looking back at last years post here, I can't believe how far I've come in 2012 and that this time around I get to make my dreams of running the New Years Eve race in Central Park a reality. Instead of watching it I'll be on of the runners hitting the pavement. Perhaps making this a yearly tradition?!?
My stomach is full of butterflies!

You can read more about my race here on my guest post at the GirlsGoneSporty website :)

I have my outfit ready for my NYE race, which consist of my first Team Sparkle skirt in red and my LED studs arrived just in time :)

I almost forgot to mention that a few hours after my first race I will wake up to get my run on here:

Yep! No New Years Eve hangover for us! By us I mean my mom, munchkin, husband and I!

I am Getting After It!!

Love,
Kary xoxo

Say Buh-Bye To Yellow Teeth!

A little over a month ago I was sent Crest 3D White strips and I was very excited to finally try them out. Since I don't have money to spend on some teeth whitening sessions I was aching to try some strips out. Therefore when Influenster let me know that I was going to be sent some to try out, I couldn't have been happier.
The box came with a 20 day supply, two strips for each day (one for your bottom teeth and another for your top teeth) individually wrapped and with the instructions on how to use the strips.

It was very easy to use and I love that I could talk and not have a weird taste in my mouth while wearing the strips.I did feel a little discomfort with the sensitivity part. My gums are a little more sensitive than others but I just made sure to use the strips in between days to help with the problem. Plus I always made sure to use the strips right before going to bed so i wouldn't have to worry about liquids or my teeth feeling weird while eating, and by the next day my teeth felt fine.

26 days later, since I used them in between days and my teeth are way whiter! I can now drink my coffee happily!

I will be buying these strips for myself in the near future :)

Disclosure: I received Crest 3D White strips as a member of Influenster. I was not compensated and all words are my own.

It starts with food...

The food you eat either makes you more healthy or less healthy.
Those are your options.

That's one of the first sentences that will greet you in the first chapter and it will resonate with you throughout the entire book! We all know by now that you are what you eat, but sometimes we need a good book to make you fully understand what that means.
I was so happy when last month I was sent a copy of this book to review. I've had it on my wishlist for a while now.
I started reading it right away and not once did I encounter a dull page where I was bored, or that I didn't understand. It's fun to read and has some funny moments, which makes it even better to read.
For everyone interested in the Paleo way of life, this is a must read. It's also great for those hardcore Paleo lovers. For me it was great because I've been interested in Paleo for a while now, and this book helped me understand how easy and perfect it really is for me.The book explains the science part of food in a way that we can all understand and it also talks about our sometimes not so normal love for food (you must always remember to chew and not just swallow)

In the book you will find some great advice on food choices and a more detailed explanation on their very famous Whole30 program. One of the things that you will notice is that they dedicate a good part of the book to meal planning, which I personally love. This girl is always looking for great food ideas and I found some great ones here.

I'm happy to report that my book is full of dog eared pages and highlighted sentences.
I will also be starting the Whole30 in January, stay tuned to see my progress reports.

You can purchase the book on Amazon or check out your local public library, but don't be surprised to find a long waiting list!

Love,
Kary xoxo

Disclosure:  I received this book for review as a member of the FitFluential family but all thoughts are my own.

Santa Claus 2012

11.24.12 - Munchkin chatting away with  Santa
This year we decided to visit Santa at the ABC Carpet & Home Store, the Macy's ones scare the bejesus out of me. They are so wax like.Yes, my munchkin still believes in Santa Claus! I still believe in him also :)
I give it two more years :( But I'll try my best.

Loved this!
Those little pink trees were - $75 and up!

I fell in love with the decor, very pricey but a girl can dream!

Santa Claus was a sweetheart, he was really jolly :) Munchkin loved being able to talk with Santa and telling him what he wanted for Christmas.
All he wants for Christmas is some Lego's and a Diary Of  A Wimpy Kid book.

Do your children still believe in Santa Claus?
Did you go see him already?

Love,
Kary xoxo

Dear Facebook, I don't like you very much!

By now you've all heard about Facebook buying off Instagram and the policy changes that will take effect on January 16, 2013. You can read more about Instagram's new Terms of service here.

I hate Facebook for buying off Instagram for a crazy amount of money and messing it up for us.
Instagram was my number 1 and I loved posting pics of my munchkin and I, about our everyday adventures in the city that never sleeps and it breaks my heart that I won't be able to do that anymore. No, I will not be closing my Instagram account but there will be changes made. I will still post pictures of food, clothes, and other items that I love, but I will not be posting pictures of my munchkin anymore for his safety. There might still be a few of me looking all sweaty and I just hope they don't turn up on some perverted board somewhere out there.

How do you feel about Instagram's new service of terms?

Will you be closing your Instagram account?

Love,
Kary xoxo

Say NO to dog & cat Mills! #HAPPYHOWLidays

A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to attend the Mom Central ASPCA blogger event which was held at the UES, ASPCA center. There we would listen to some of the ASPCA workers and get a tour of the facility. While we waited for the event to begin we were able enjoy a lovely breakfast and chat with fellow mom bloggers.

Soon after breakfast we got the chance to listen at how the ASPCA program works and how great it is to adopt a puppy or cat with them. Not only do they offer great programs like their "Meet Your Match Program", where they help you go home with the right dog for you and your family. Or their behavioral classes that are available when you adopt a dog with them, at $25 for 4 classes it's a total steal.
The biggest plus?! When adopting with ASPCA you are saying NO to dog and cat mills!

We've all seen the cute little puppies and kitties at the pet stores and go ahhhhhhh! Or run inside to pet them.
I know I've done it before :( But what I didn't know is that these animals come from dog or cat mills.
Where they are locked inside tiny cages, that are very unsanitary, no human contact, no comfort and where they are constantly being breeded.
That's why you must not buy from a pet shop!! But what will happen to those poor animals. Well first of all there is supply and demand. If the shop owners see that the animals are not being sold, the prices start being slashed until the dog or cat is sold. They see it's really not worth it to sell these pets, so they will stop selling them. If you see cruel things going at a pet store contact your local authority and they can help, unless it's a concern about the animals not being fed or their cage being a little bit dirty. That's where you call your local ASPCA center and they will help!
Do not buy at these pet shops where dogs or cats are being sold, do not support them. Take your business somewhere else!
You can find more information on the benefits of of adopting a puppy rather than buying one from a pet store here.
Don't support dog and cat mills!!

After the QA's we got the chance to see the beautiful dogs and cats that need homes!
It broke my heart to see the dogs and cats that are in need of a good loving home but it made me happy to see that they were at a center where they were being nicely cared for and being loved until they find the perfect home!

This cutie kept on playing with my sister.

This was the cutest and playful kitty ever

At this point I started to break down. Look at that little face!

Another cutie :)

So, my loves! Remember that when thinking about a pet for your family go to a shelter or an ASPCA adoption center, where your newest addition will be waiting for you. In the meantime if adopting a dog or cat is not an option there are still ways that you can help out!
You can donate here and $0.60 a day can make a difference!
Donate today and help save lives :)

For behavioral tips and information on bringing home new pets into the family go to:

If you decide to adopt a pet this holiday season you can go to your local ASPCA adoption center and use code: HAPPYHOWLidays to receive 10% off the adoption fee.

Happy Howlidays my friends!

Love,
Kary xoxo

Once a runner, Always a runner....

I always knew I wanted to be a runner, I've always loved the rush and the feeling of my feet hitting the pavement!
That's my mom and I, during one of our races in 1991.

Thanks to my pappa being a marathoner (he's the one in purple with the Mexican flag on his tank) and him loving to run we were able to grow up in that atmosphere. I remember my dad going to train every afternoon in Central Park. We would all get ready and my mom would take us to the park to wait for my dad, as he ran around the park we played in the playground or jumped rope. My aunts knew to never call the house in the afternoons, because we were always at the park. They said we should have built a house there, oh how I wish that would have been possible.
Every Sunday was race day and we would wake up early to go wait by the finish line and root for our pappa as he ran by us or crossed the finish line. It was our way of life and I loved it!
Before my 1st race - Ha! Look at our faces :) It has to do with that little band-aid on my knee!
My pappa, baby brother and I - after the race!
It was even more special when my dad started signing us up for races. Sure it was nerve wrecking being in a crowd of women and being only 10yrs old. Not to mention that the day I ran my first race ever was also the day my period decided to make it's appearance, oh and I fell and hurt my knee. So much going on and the race hadn't even started. I remember crying when my mom started to run faster than me, I didn't want to be left behind. I was afraid of losing her in the crowd, but she knew what she was doing. I've always been the kind of person to push myself harder, I hated people wining me or passing me by. The moment my mom started running ahead of me, I knew I had to run faster to catch up to her! I did, yes I was crying and running but I did it!
I finished my first race and I was hooked!

With my pappa after racing in the Race For The Cure - 1993

We grew up a family of runners! Left to Right: My sister, me, mom and baby brother - 1995
Thanks to my dad and mom's support I was able to participate in many more races! My last race was actually two years after munchkin was born, which means that was back in 2005.
I haven't raced since, no that doesn't mean I stopped loving to run and race. I've always had it in my mind and it's been in up and down journey for 7yrs now. A journey that started with me trying to lose the weight that I'd gained and ended up with me finding my passion for running again!
I was able to find me - I am a runner!!

And thanks to Girls Gone Sporty I will be able to race again. This girl will be participating in her first race since 2005! I am the first ever GGS grant recipient for the Ambassador group!

I signed up for the grant back in October and patiently waited to see if I would get it. As I lay sick in bed on Sunday - November 18 (date will be engraved in my head) I decided to skim through my email, what else could I do, and my eyes hit "GGS Ambassador Grant". I was scared to open it, what would I do if I didn't get it. I mean you can sign up every month, until you receive a grant than you must wait a certain amount of time to sign up for another one. But my heart was set on this one.
Why? It's a New Year's Eve race, that's why! That means that I would end 2012 and start 2013 doing what I love most - Running!

I'm so grateful that my dream is coming true thanks to Girls Gone Sporty!
I am ending this year with  a bang and I wouldn't have it any other way. The moment my finger hit the submit button on the registration for the Midnight Race I knew it was real. These coming days full of training & mental preparation will be so surreal, until the moment that my feet actually cross that finish line :)

Yay! For dreams coming true and a girl finding herself again!!

Thank you Girls Gone Sporty, Laura and you my loves for always rooting me on and believing in me!!

Love you all!!

To train I say - To train :)

Love,
Kary xoxo

Energizer & Crayola Help You Power The Creativity!

About a week and a half ago munchkin and I were invited to go to the "Power The Creativity Crayola and Energizer event downtown. There we would be able to check out some of the hottest Crayola toys that were of course powered by Energizer, everybody knows that it's the only battery that keeps going and going!

Trying out the Light Up Tracing Pad! Now all of you know that munchkin loves his art, so once he got a hold of this Crayola toy no on could move him :) He spent the rest of the time left drawing!

An almost finished masterpiece!

While munchkin played I was able to learn a little bit more about Energizer's New Power Seal Technology. Everybody knows that when buying batteries Energizer is the way to go.
But what's so special about Energizer MAX batteries is that these can now hold their power for 10yrs! What does that mean? That you can stock up on these babies and not worry about having them stored away in a drawer, and that when you have a hysterical child crying by your side because his favorite toy has just run out of life you'll worry about those stored batteries in your drawer, they will be ready for use. Trust me that's not a pretty situation! I remember having one or two of those episodes when munchkin was younger and it wasn't pretty.
You can safely store these for 10 years and find them ready to use. Remember that, as your doing your shopping during the next few days. I know these are top priority for me, as I will be gifting toys. There's nothing worse like an excited child or adult unwrapping a present to find that it needs batteries and there aren't any, do your loved one a favor and get them a pair of batteries if it's called for.

For my candle lovers, have you ever considered a battery operated candle? I've always wanted to try one but I hadn't found one that I liked. I was gifted an Energizer Flameless Waxed Candle, and can I tell you that I love it. Not only does it do the flicker thing that makes it look so real but it smells amazing!!
When I took it out of the package I couldn't believe it, now munchkin and I just take turns using it. He falls asleep with it next to him every night, and I don't have to worry about their being a fire or him getting burned. Now when I know he's really asleep I'll quietly sneak in to his room and use it for my late night bubble bath, it's great for relaxing in the tub while I read a nice book.
We love it and you better believe that I will be purchasing more! One for each of us :)

So my loves remember your Energizer Max batteries as you go shopping this holiday season and when you purchase specially marked packs of  Energizer Max AA-16 and AAA-16 batteries you'll find crayola coupons that will help you save up to $20 on selected Crayola products!
Thank you Mom Central, Energizer and Crayola for a wonderful evening!

Love,
Kary xoxo

2012 Runner Holiday Gift Guide

It's cyber Monday loves and this girl has her credit card ready to go.
Ha, I wish!
I seriously wish I could buy all the things on my Christmas wish list, if only I'd win some sort of fitness scholarship where I could buy all the fitness gear my heart desired.
 Let's imagine I did?!?
And that I could pick some items from my Christmas wish list.
These are just some of the things I'd buy:

Perfect for these upcoming, very cold morning runs in Central Park. Including my special very race that's coming up! Race?!? Yep, more info coming up on this exciting news :)

I say it over and over again, sparkle and glitter is a must in life!
This girl needs to get her hands on one of these sparkle skirts - STAT!!

These make for a great fun run. I love the color and chevron stripes! What's not to love :)

Earphones that don't fall out while your running or kicking your fats butt?!? Yes please!!
I'll take a pair in pink. Thank you very much!

A B.I.A Training Journal from Believe I Am
Perfect to write down your training and goals. It's full of motivational quotes!

Do the runner in your life a favor and get him or her a pair of compression socks. Not only will they look super cool in them, but it will also help prevent injuries, help improve their performance and endurance, and provide their achy feet some relief!

My heart and feet are aching for some Mizunos!!

This girl loves her Polar FT4 HRM and now it's time to upgrade and get one with GPS!
This one is my #1 on my wish list!

Aside from running apparel or watches, a nice gift certificate for a massage or spa treatment is always nice. Not only would your favorite runner appreciate it, I'm sure their sore muscles would also love it!
Or the gift of racing! Races can be pricey which can sometimes make it hard to participate in lots of races, a gift card so they can sign up for a race, would be awesome!

Spoil the runner in your life, they deserve it!
They train hard, run in the rain, cold, and hot days.
Love,
Kary xoxo
